Sending Christmas Cheer

If our recent post about the Christmas Gift Fund got you thinking about sending a Christmas gift on your own, we have two words for you.

Please don't.

We know that sounds harsh, but the reality is this: even if a fraction of sponsors decided to send their sponsored child a gift, we would be inundated. All of our mail processing would slow down tremendously, including letters to and from your sponsored child all because we have to turn our attention to the larger gifts.

And then shipping them -- did you know mailing a one-pound package to Mozambique can cost more than $100? If 10% of our sponsors decided to send a "small gift," that's 4000 presents... and many more thousands of dollars to ensure the children receive them.

We know your hearts long to bless your sponsored child. And we want to make it as easy as possible for you to do so, which is why we opened the Christmas Gift Fund. By compiling your donations and dividing them equally among all the children, we can ensure every child receives a present.

By buying the presents in your child's country, we save on shipping and processing fees, meaning that more of your donation goes toward the gifts themselves. Buying gifts locally also supports the local economy and keeps the community involved in the program.

That may be difficult for you to hear, especially if you love to give gifts. But the staff of the project your sponsored child attends know your child's needs as well. While the gifts they purchase on your behalf may seem overly practical to you (few of us fondly remember receiving socks or shoes for Christmas) they are a tremendous blessing to your sponsored child and their family.

We don't want you to be discouraged -- you are more than welcome to send a Christmas letter or card to your sponsored child. If you send it before the end of October, your sponsored child is more likely to receive it before the Christmas holiday. You can even include some simple paper crafts to spread Christmas cheer and share more about your own traditions.

Please consider a gift to the Christmas Gift Fund. You can make your donation today, then let our staff do the shopping for you!
